KATHMANDU: Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Prithvi Subba Gurung, has instructed Nepal Telecom to immediately commence 5G services, emphasizing the urgency of technological advancement. Speaking at Nepal Telecom’s 21st anniversary celebration on Tuesday, the minister stressed that while the global telecom industry is preparing for 6G internet, Nepal must act swiftly to roll out 5G services in its major cities to keep pace with international developments.
“The developed world is gearing up for 6G internet. We, however, need to ensure that 5G services are launched in Nepal’s major cities without delay. Nepal Telecom has a crucial role in this,” said Minister Gurung, highlighting the importance of rapid digital transformation.
He warned that Nepal Telecom risks falling behind if it fails to embrace technological advancements. He stated that communication and information technology are among the fastest-growing sectors globally, and Nepal cannot afford to lag. He emphasized that adapting to rapid changes in technology is crucial for Nepal Telecom to remain competitive.
“Sooner or later, outdated technologies become irrelevant. The world is constantly evolving with new innovations, particularly in the communication and information technology sector. If we fail to keep up with the pace of time, we will be left behind. Technology becomes obsolete in an instant,” he remarked.
Minister Gurung underlined the need for Nepal to transition into the digital age, leveraging technology to advance key sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, education, energy, and tourism. He urged Nepal Telecom to take the lead in expanding digital connectivity across the country and ensure that services reach all citizens efficiently.
He also pointed out the changing revenue dynamics in the telecom industry, stating that data services have now surpassed voice services as the primary source of income for telecom companies worldwide. Nepal Telecom, he stressed, must focus on strengthening its data service infrastructure to remain financially sustainable and relevant in the evolving market.
“It is no secret that telecom companies worldwide now rely more on data services than voice services for revenue. Nepal Telecom must take the lead in this shift. In an open and competitive market, Telecom must adapt to the changing times, and this should not require constant reminders,” he said.
The minister further urged Nepal Telecom to expand its 4G services nationwide, ensuring that every household has access to reliable internet connectivity. Additionally, he directed the company’s management to extend broadband connections to all local wards and provide round-the-clock maintenance services to enhance customer experience.
“I believe Nepal Telecom will soon achieve its goal of providing 4G coverage to every household. At the same time, the company must prioritize extending broadband connectivity to local governments and wards. I trust that Nepal Telecom will also provide 24/7 maintenance services to ensure seamless customer service,” he added.
