KATHMANDU: The government has prepared a bill to split the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) into two separate entities: a regulatory body and a service provider. The Cabinet meeting has granted approval for the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation to register the bill in Parliament.
The Cabinet’s decision to approve the registration of the bill was made during its meeting on December 20.
Previously, on February 23, 2020, the government had introduced two bills to separate CAAN. While the National Assembly passed the bills on August 3, 2021, they were left unattended by the House of Representatives, rendering them inactive.
The call to bifurcate CAAN into regulatory and service-providing entities resurfaced in July following the crash of a Shree Airlines aircraft at Tribhuvan International Airport.
