KATHMANDU: The Economic Media Society Nepal (EMSON) recently met with the newly appointed Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Bishnu Prasad Poudel. A delegation from EMSON, including its executive committee, visited the Finance Ministry in Singha Durbar on Tuesday to offer their congratulations and best wishes to Minister Poudel.
During the meeting, Minister Poudel expressed his readiness to work closely with EMSON to foster positive developments in Nepal’s economy. He emphasized the importance of continuous dialogue and cooperation, saying, “I urge you to always remain engaged in dialogue and cooperation. There are certain issues that can be brought to light through the media. We might overlook some areas. We sometimes perceive small matters as big and big matters as small. If you raise awareness about such issues, it will aid the government.”
Minister Poudel lauded the organized efforts of economic media organizations, underscoring the crucial role they play in maintaining a balanced and accountable state. “Media, as the fourth estate, plays a crucial role in preventing the state from becoming arbitrary and autocratic. Irregularities and disorder increase otherwise,” he noted. He acknowledged that media insights into the state of the economy provide valuable advice and suggestions, which are essential for informed governance.
He further emphasized that positive outcomes are achievable when both the government and the media operate responsibly. “When both the government and the media work responsibly, the media’s work becomes effective. The role of the minister can also be effective. Therefore, we must work responsibly to send a positive message,” Minister Poudel stated.
Minister Poudel also highlighted his awareness of the high expectations placed on him as Finance Minister. “The country and the people have certain expectations. We should strive to meet those expectations to some extent. Hence, the Ministry of Finance and EMSON should work as one unit, not as two sides of the same coin, but as one coin,” he affirmed.
EMSON President Ram Raja Shrestha expressed confidence in the new Finance Minister’s ability to address the economic challenges faced by the country. He highlighted the need to resolve issues related to advertisement distribution and other economic hurdles. “Since your appointment as Finance Minister, there has been some improvement in the capital market. We believe that other sectors of the economy will also become dynamic. May this confidence remain throughout your tenure,” Shrestha said.
The meeting underscored the mutual commitment to fostering a collaborative relationship between the government and the media to enhance Nepal’s economic landscape. Minister Poudel’s openness to media insights and the media’s organized efforts were recognized as pivotal for achieving sustainable economic growth and development.
