US to give 80 million vaccine doses to priority nations including Nepal, 75% via Covax program

KATHMANDU: US President Joe Biden unveiled his plan for the first of 80 million coronavirus vaccine doses being distributed globally, including to Nepal, with 75% of shots disbursed via the UN-linked Covax program.

“We are sharing these doses not to secure favors or extract concessions. We are sharing these vaccines to save lives and to lead the world in bringing an end to the pandemic, with the power of our example and with our values,” Biden says in a statement.

In a fact sheet, the White House says that for the doses shared through Covax, Washington will prioritize countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, South and Southeast Asia, and Africa.

“I join my fellow Americans, & all friends of Nepal, in celebrating the White House announcement that Nepal will be among the countries to receive direct vaccine donations from the United States. More details are coming soon,” tweeted Randy Berry, US Ambassador to Nepal.

Meanwhile, media reports have been public saying that US is providing five million doses of Covid-19 vaccines to Nepal and first batch of these vaccines will be supplied to Nepal by June end.

Earlier last week, President Bidhya Devi Bhandari had requested US President Biden to help Nepal with Covid-19 vaccines.
