KATHMANDU: Sugarcane farmers have announced that they will launch a protest from December 12. The farmers decided to protest against the sugarcane mills for delaying in making their payments of the sugarcane that they had sold to the mills last year.
Handing over a memorandum to Minister of Industry, Commerce and Supplies, Lekhraj Bhatta, at Singha Durbar on Sunday, they said they will start an agitation if all their dues are not paid.
Ramsogartha Raya, chairman of the Sugarcane Farmers’ Struggle Committee, Sarlahi, said that the government has remained quiet despite the extreme injustice being faced by the farmers.
Stating that the government has been protecting the industrialists who don’t pay the hardworking farmers, Raya asked the government to end the compulsion for farmers to visit Kathmandu every year to get the money that they have duly earned.
In response, Minister Bhatta reiterated his commitment to provide money to the farmers. He said that the farmers would be paid by selling the property of the closed industries if the concerned industrialists failed to make payments. The minister also stated that industrialists who do not pay the farmers on time after buying the sugarcane will be arrested.
Assuring the farmers that he would do all that is possible to help them get their dues, Bhatta requested them not to launch an agitation.
