Nepal-China launch Chengdu-Pokhara regular charter flights for 70th diplomatic anniversary

KATHMANDU: In a significant development marking the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Nepal and China, regular commercial charter flights are set to commence between Chengdu, China, and Pokhara International Airport. Facilitated by Sichuan Airlines with support from Sichuan Province, the first flight is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, ushering in a new era of enhanced connectivity between the two nations.

The Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) has expressed optimism that this new air route will strengthen Nepal-China relations by boosting tourism, fostering cultural exchanges, and elevating commercial cooperation to new heights.

“The Pokhara-Chengdu flight will provide affordable and convenient access for travelers from central and western Nepal while offering Chinese tourists the opportunity to explore the scenic beauty of Pokhara,” the NTB stated in an official release. “This air link is expected to play a pivotal role in supporting the ‘Visit Nepal 2025’ campaign announced by the Chinese government and the ‘Pokhara Tourism Year’ initiative by the Nepalese government, significantly increasing the arrival of international tourists to Nepal.”

The flights, operated by Sichuan Airlines, are anticipated to deepen the bond between the two countries by connecting their cities, further solidifying mutual friendship and collaboration. As part of the inaugural flight on Tuesday, a Nepalese delegation will travel to China for the “Pokhara-Chengdu Flight Promotion and China (Sichuan) Sales Mission 2025.” The delegation will participate in business meetings with government and private sector representatives in Chinese cities such as Chengdu, Luzhou, and Leshan.

“These efforts will not only promote Nepal as a premier tourism destination but also strengthen cooperation in the tourism sectors of both countries,” the NTB’s statement added.

The Nepal Tourism Board extended its gratitude to Sichuan Airlines, the Sichuan Provincial Government, the Pokhara Tourism Council, and all stakeholders involved in making this historic initiative a reality. “This new air connectivity is expected to deepen cultural exchanges and provide significant support in establishing Nepal as a leading international tourism destination,” the NTB concluded.

The launch of the Chengdu-Pokhara route is seen as a milestone in Nepal-China relations, promising mutual benefits and a brighter future for tourism and bilateral ties.
