Over 66,000 Nepalis left country for permanent residency in 2024

KATHMANDU: A total of 66,835 Nepalis left the country in 2024 seeking permanent residency abroad, according to the latest data from the Department of Immigration. Among them, 32,287 were women, while 34,544 were men.

The report further reveals that in the past year, a staggering 1,674,225 Nepalis traveled abroad for various purposes. Of them, 101,827 individuals left Nepal for temporary residency in foreign countries. However, the majority of Nepalis who migrated did so in search of employment opportunities.

Decline in Permanent Migration, Rise in Temporary Residency
The number of Nepalis leaving the country for permanent residency has slightly declined compared to the previous year. In 2023, 70,915 individuals had left Nepal permanently, whereas in 2024, the figure dropped to 66,835. However, the number of people leaving for temporary residency has increased. Last year, 92,349 individuals left Nepal for temporary settlement, a figure that has now risen.

Majority Migrating for Employment
The largest share of Nepalis leaving the country continues to be those seeking job opportunities abroad. In the past year, 856,422 Nepalis went overseas in search of employment, including 96,197 women and 769,890 men.

Additionally, the data highlights other key reasons for migration:

119,409 individuals left Nepal for higher education
18,713 Nepalis traveled abroad for medical treatment
5,847 personnel were deployed on United Nations missions
2,680 individuals traveled for sports-related activities

The data underscores Nepal’s ongoing trend of large-scale migration, primarily driven by employment and better living opportunities abroad.
