53 tattoo artists from 20 countries explore Kirtipur’s heritage

KATHMANDU: A group of 53 tattoo artists representing 20 countries embarked on a captivating heritage walk in Kirtipur today, delving into the ancient city’s rich cultural and historical tapestry. The event, a prelude to the upcoming Nepal Tattoo Convention 2025, showcased Kirtipur’s timeless charm and its growing appeal as a cultural hub for international visitors.

The artists, hailing from nations as diverse as the USA, UK, Germany, Australia, India, Singapore, Italy, Indonesia, Cambodia, France, Costa Rica, Spain, China, Turkey, Hong Kong, Ukraine, Argentina, Canada, Austria, and Nepal, were greeted with warm hospitality by the Kirtipur Community Homestay. This community-driven initiative reflects the city’s commitment to sustainable tourism, offering visitors an authentic glimpse into local life.

Organized by the Kirtipur Volunteer Society (KVS) with support from the Kirtipur Guide Association, the heritage walk was meticulously designed to highlight the city’s historical landmarks. Participants visited iconic sites such as the Chilancho Stupa and the Bagh Bhairab Temple, marveling at their architectural grandeur and spiritual significance. “This walk is more than a tour—it’s a bridge between global artists and Nepal’s living heritage,” said a KVS volunteer guiding the group.

Sudhan Subedi, President of KVS, expressed his delight at hosting the international delegation. “We’re honored that Kirtipur could serve as a meaningful backdrop for this global gathering,” he said. “Our gratitude goes to the artists and the Nepal Tattoo Convention organizers for choosing our city to kick off this celebration of art and culture.” Subedi highlighted KVS’s ongoing efforts to promote Kirtipur’s unique identity through regular heritage walks, a mission that has gained momentum with support from local stakeholders.

The visiting artists, in Nepal for the Nepal Tattoo Convention 2025, found the experience enriching. “Kirtipur’s history and warmth are inspiring,” said an artist from Spain. “It’s incredible to connect with this place before we showcase our work at the convention.” The event fostered a cross-cultural exchange, blending the modern artistry of tattooing with the ancient traditions of Nepal.

The Nepal Tattoo Convention 2025, scheduled for April 11–13 at the Sanepa Heritage Garden in Lalitpur, is poised to be a landmark event, drawing tattoo enthusiasts and professionals from around the world. Actively promoted by the Nepal Tourism Board, the convention aligns with broader efforts to fuse art, culture, and tourism. “This is a fantastic opportunity to position Nepal as a vibrant destination for creative and cultural exchange,” said a Tourism Board representative.

Kirtipur, with its medieval architecture and storied past, proved an ideal setting for the heritage walk. Once a fortified kingdom, the city retains its historical allure through its cobblestone streets, traditional Newari homes, and sacred sites. The participation of international artists underscores its growing prominence on the global stage, complementing Nepal’s tourism narrative of blending tradition with modernity.

As the tattoo artists prepare for the convention, their time in Kirtipur has set a reflective tone for the days ahead. “This walk has given us a deeper appreciation for Nepal’s heritage,” said an artist from Canada. “It’s a perfect start to what promises to be an unforgettable event.” With 53 creative minds from 20 countries now carrying a piece of Kirtipur’s story, the city’s legacy is set to resonate far beyond its ancient walls.
