Nepal and Thailand ink tourism and culture agreements during PM Oli’s visit

KATHMANDU: Nepal and Thailand have taken a significant step toward strengthening bilateral ties by signing two key memoranda of understanding (MoUs) focused on tourism and cultural cooperation. The agreements were formalized today in the presence of Nepal’s Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and Thailand’s Prime Minister Pae Thong Than Shinawatra, marking a high point of Oli’s ongoing official visit to the Southeast Asian nation.
The signing ceremony saw Nepal’s Foreign Minister Dr. Arzu Rana Deuba putting pen to paper on behalf of her country. On the Thai side, Culture Minister Sudawan Suphajikijkosol signed the cultural cooperation MoU, while Tourism and Sports Minister Sorawong Tinthong endorsed the tourism partnership agreement. The event underscored a mutual commitment to deepening ties in sectors vital to both nations’ identities and economies.
Beyond government-level agreements, the occasion also witnessed the signing of multiple MoUs between non-governmental entities from both countries. These additional pacts, inked with the prime ministers in attendance, span critical areas such as health, education, and trade and commerce, signaling a broader intent to foster collaboration across various spheres.
Prime Minister Oli, who arrived in Thailand on March 31, 2025, is leading Nepal’s delegation not only for this bilateral engagement but also to attend the sixth BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) Summit. His visit, which blends diplomacy with regional cooperation, highlights Nepal’s growing outreach in Asia. The tourism MoU is expected to boost visitor exchanges, leveraging Thailand’s robust tourism industry and Nepal’s rich Himalayan heritage, while the cultural agreement aims to promote mutual understanding through shared traditions and heritage.
The agreements come at a time when Nepal seeks to bolster its international partnerships amid domestic challenges, offering a glimmer of positive momentum for Oli’s administration. As the BIMSTEC Summit unfolds, these MoUs could set the stage for further regional collaboration, with Nepal and Thailand poised to lead by example in cultural and economic synergy.
