34th APT wireless group meeting kicks off in Kathmandu

KATHMANDU: The 34th meeting of the APT Wireless Group (AWG-34), organized by the Asia-Pacific Telecommunity (APT) in collaboration with Nepal’s Ministry of Communication and Information Technology and the Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA), commenced on Monday in Kathmandu. The event marks a significant gathering aimed at advancing wireless technology and addressing digital connectivity challenges across the Asia-Pacific region.

Speaking at the inaugural session, Minister of Communication and Information Technology Prithvi Subba Gurung emphasized the pivotal role of wireless technology as the foundation for digital transformation. He highlighted that the AWG serves as a crucial platform to position Nepal as a digital and IT hub in South Asia. “This meeting will help reduce the digital divide and foster equitable connectivity, benefiting Nepal and other nations,” Gurung stated.

He expressed confidence that the discussions would yield actionable insights on critical topics such as the commercial rollout of 5G, satellite communication, the Internet of Things (IoT), spectrum harmonization, and efficient frequency utilization. “I expect this meeting to refine the future of mobile technology and pave the way for maximizing investment returns,” he added.

NTA Chairman Bhupendra Bhandari underscored the AWG’s importance in spectrum management, next-generation wireless technologies, and bridging connectivity gaps between rural and urban areas. Noting the eagerness of Nepali users for 5G’s commercial deployment, Bhandari acknowledged challenges such as declining telecom operator revenues, Nepal’s rugged geography, and the persistent digital divide. He affirmed that the NTA is working to modernize telecom policies and laws to address these issues. “This meeting will play a vital role in expanding telecommunications and overcoming regional challenges. The NTA remains committed to collaborating with APT,” he said.

The AWG-34 agenda includes discussions on emerging digital technologies, effective radio communication solutions, and knowledge sharing. The meeting has drawn nearly 400 delegates from 38 APT member countries in the Asia-Pacific region. Established under the United Nations’ ESCAP and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), APT has included Nepal’s Ministry of Communication and Information Technology as a member since July 1, 1979.
