Private sector organizations demand assurance of a secure business environment

KATHMANDU: Three prominent private sector organizations in Nepal have strongly condemned the anarchic activities, including vandalism, looting, and violent acts, that took place on Friday in the Tinkune area of Kathmandu. The Federation of Nepalese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI), the Confederation of Nepalese Industries (CNI), and other business bodies issued separate press statements expressing their outrage and calling for immediate action to ensure a secure environment for commerce.

The FNCCI, in its statement, deplored the widespread acts of arson and looting targeting private media houses, business enterprises, offices, and commercial activities. Describing the incidents as “condemnable,” the organization highlighted the severe disruptions caused to the business community and public life. It urged the government and relevant stakeholders to take swift measures to restore order and prevent further escalation of such destructive acts. Additionally, the FNCCI demanded compensation for the affected businesses, emphasizing the need to address the financial losses and property damage suffered during the unrest.

Similarly, the Confederation of Nepalese Industries (CNI) echoed these concerns, stressing that the right to conduct business in a safe and secure manner is fundamental. The CNI called on authorities to prioritize the protection of private enterprises and public infrastructure, warning that unchecked violence could deter investment and economic growth in the region. Other organizations also joined the chorus, amplifying the call for accountability and security.

The violent incidents in Tinkune, which saw mobs engaging in looting and setting fire to properties, have raised alarm across Nepal’s private sector. The FNCCI specifically pointed to the broader implications, noting that attacks on public property and violent protests undermine the stability necessary for economic progress. It urged all stakeholders—government, security forces, and civil society—to collaborate in controlling such activities and ensuring the safety of public spaces.

As the situation unfolds, the private sector’s unified stance underscores the urgency of addressing the unrest in Kathmandu, with calls for both immediate security measures and long-term safeguards to protect Nepal’s economic backbone.
