Nepal Government removes NEA chief Kul Man Ghising from post

KATHMANDU: The government of Nepal has sacked Kulman Ghising, the Managing Director of the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), following a Cabinet meeting held on Monday evening.
A minister confirmed the decision, marking the end of Ghising’s second tenure, which began on August 9, 2021 (25 Shrawan 2078).
Ghising, a prominent figure credited with ending chronic loadshedding during his first term, faced mounting scrutiny in recent months over power import agreements and tariff disputes with India.
His removal comes amid ongoing tensions with Energy Minister Deepak Khadka and the Cabinet, who had questioned his decisions, including a controversial 1.5% tariff hike agreed with Indian authorities. The sudden decision has sparked speculation about the future direction of Nepal’s energy sector, with no official replacement announced yet.
Meanwhile, Hitendra Dev Shakya has been appointed as the new Managing Director of the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA). A minister confirmed that the decision was made during a Cabinet meeting held on Monday evening. Shakya’s appointment follows the removal of Kulman Ghising from the same position, signaling a significant leadership change in Nepal’s power sector.
