KATHMANDU: Ncell has officially launched Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWi-Fi), enabling customers to make and receive calls using their existing Ncell number over a Wi-Fi internet connection as part of its ongoing commitment to delivering innovative technologies and enhancing connectivity for Nepali consumers.
Ncell’sVoWi-Fi service—also known as Wi-Fi Calling—provides users with the ability to make HD voice calls and send text messages even in areas where mobile network signals are weak, such as in building basements or remote locations, by utilizing a stable Wi-Fi connection. Initially, the VoWi-Fi service will be available for iPhone models starting from the iPhone 8 and above.
Importantly, there are no additional charges for using the VoWi-Fi service. Customers will continue to pay the standard rates for voice and SMS services, while benefiting from enhanced coverage that keeps them connected even in areas with poor mobile signals.
Similar to Voice over Long-Term Evolution (VoLTE), which relies on a 4G network, VoWi-Fi requires a stable and reliable Wi-Fi connection. One of the key advantages of VoWi-Fi is its ability to seamlessly switch between Wi-Fi and mobile networks during active calls, allowing for a smooth and uninterrupted calling experience, even if the Wi-Fi connection becomes weak or unavailable. This makes VoWi-Fi an invaluable tool for users in areas with fluctuating or low mobile network coverage.
Ncell is excited to introduce this cutting-edge service as a complementary technology to VoLTE, offering customers the ability to stay connected with superior coverage even in places with poor indoor or basement network signals.
The company also plans to expand VoWi-Fi’s availability to other leading brands and models, including Samsung, Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo, in the near future. This expansion will allow even more consumers to enjoy this service. Having already extended its 4G network to cover 94% of the nation’s population, Ncell is committed to ensuring that both VoLTE and VoWi-Fi are widely accessible across Nepal.
To activate the VoWi-Fi service, customers with VoWi-Fi-enabled devices must download the Ncell App and activate VoWi-Fi. Once activated, users can connect to any Wi-Fi network to start using Wi-Fi calling.
Before activation, customers should ensure that both VoLTE and VoWi-Fi/Wi-Fi calling are enabled in their device settings. This can be done by navigating to Settings > Mobile Networks > SIM Card and enabling the VoWi-Fi or Wi-Fi calling option. These steps are similar for both Android and iOS devices. If users see options such as VoWi-Fi or Wi-Fi Calling, it confirms that their device supports the feature.
