KATHMANDU: The U.S. government has intensified its crackdown on undocumented immigrants, with over 1.4 million individuals set to be deported. According to the latest figures released by the U.S. Immigration Office, 1,445,549 immigrants from various countries are on the deportation list, including 1,365 Nepalis.
This mass deportation initiative comes after Donald Trump’s return to the presidency, as he pushes forward with his strict immigration policies. Trump, who has long advocated for tough measures against undocumented immigrants, signed an executive order immediately after taking the oath of office, directing authorities to expedite deportations. His administration has labeled this move as a necessary step to safeguard American jobs and national security.
Largest Deportation Campaign in U.S. History
This latest wave of deportations marks one of the most extensive efforts against illegal immigration in U.S. history. The policy primarily targets individuals who have been living in the country without legal documentation, many of whom have been residing in the U.S. for years.
Among the countries with the highest number of deportees, Honduras, Guatemala, Mexico, and El Salvador top the list:
Honduras: 261,651
Guatemala: 253,413
Mexico: 252,044
El Salvador: 203,822
Additionally, China and India also have significant numbers of individuals facing deportation. According to the report, 37,908 Chinese nationals and 17,940 Indian nationals are among those set to be expelled.
Impact on Nepali Immigrants
The inclusion of 1,365 Nepalis in the deportation list has raised concerns within the Nepali-American community. Many undocumented Nepalis in the U.S. have been working in various sectors, contributing to the economy while seeking better opportunities. With Trump’s hardline stance on immigration, these individuals now face an uncertain future.
Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has yet to release an official statement regarding the deportation of Nepali citizens. However, human rights organizations and immigrant advocacy groups in the U.S. have criticized the move, arguing that mass deportations could lead to humanitarian crises, particularly for those who have built their lives in the country.
Political and Economic Repercussions
The U.S. government’s aggressive deportation policy is expected to have far-reaching consequences, both politically and economically. Trump’s strict stance on immigration has already sparked debates within the international community, with critics arguing that such measures could strain diplomatic relations with affected nations.
Additionally, the impact on labor markets could be significant, as many deported immigrants have been part of the U.S. workforce for years. Experts warn that industries reliant on immigrant labor, such as agriculture, construction, and hospitality, may face severe worker shortages.
As the deportation process accelerates, immigrant rights groups have vowed to challenge the policy in court, seeking legal pathways to protect those facing expulsion. Meanwhile, affected families, including the Nepali diaspora, are bracing for the difficult road ahead as they await further developments.
