KATHMANDU: The National Cyber Security Center, operating under the Ministry of Communications, has issued an advisory requiring all government employees to change their passwords every three months. This measure aims to bolster the security of government systems and prevent unauthorized access.
The advisory emphasizes the importance of creating strong, hard-to-guess passwords and maintaining a secure password management system. It also instructs employees to implement systems that enforce this three-month password renewal policy. The center stated that the initiative is crucial to safeguarding against cyber threats such as website hacking and data breaches, which have increasingly targeted government systems in recent years.
Concerns over unauthorized access to government websites have risen significantly, prompting criticism of the government’s cybersecurity framework. High-profile breaches have exposed vulnerabilities in current systems, highlighting the urgent need for stronger safeguards.
The cybersecurity advisory outlines various measures for strengthening security, including protecting government websites, applications, servers, storage systems, and office networks. It also addresses the security of desktop computers, laptops, printers, and other devices used in government offices.
Additionally, employees are advised on best practices for internet browsing, email usage, and avoiding phishing attacks. Guidelines for securing removable media, mobile devices, and social media accounts are also included to minimize risks associated with cyber threats.
The National Cyber Security Center emphasized that these measures are essential to maintaining the integrity of sensitive government data and ensuring public trust in state systems. It further encouraged employees to remain vigilant and proactive in adopting cybersecurity protocols.
This directive comes as part of a broader effort to modernize Nepal’s cybersecurity infrastructure and align with international standards. Authorities believe that consistent implementation of these measures will significantly reduce the risk of cyberattacks and enhance the resilience of government IT systems.
