Genese CEO submits petition to Dr Koirala, calls for promotion of IT sector in Nepal

LONDON: Founder and CEO of Genese Solution, a UK-based value IT consulting and cybersecurity company, Anjani Phuyal, has called upon the government of Nepal to take urgent steps to establish Nepal as a tech hub.

On the sidelines of an event organised by the Embassy of Nepal in London on Friday, Mr Phuyal briefed visiting senior leader of Nepali Congress, Dr Shekhar Koirala, about the potential of IT in Nepal and also handed him over a petition.

According to a recent study conducted by IIDS, Nepal is earning approximately USD 515 million annually through the export of IT-enabled services (ITeS). The report highlights the presence of 106 IT service export companies and 14,728 IT freelancers specializing in software development and technology, along with 51,781 ITeS freelancers providing services via digital platforms .

The Government of Nepal (GoN) has adopted the Digital Nepal Framework (DNF) in 2019 to promote digitalization and advance IT infrastructure across the nation. In the fiscal year 2024-25 budget speech, the government outlined an ambitious target of exporting IT products and services worth Rs. 3 trillion within the next decade. Initiatives include establishing mini IT parks by repurposing government and private complexes and prioritizing local IT companies in public procurement, among others.

“While we welcome these initiatives, we believe additional steps are crucial to transform Nepal into a globally recognized tech hub,” said Mr Phuyal in the petition, calling upon the Nepal government to strengthen infrastructure and policy frameworks, provide financial support and sisk mitigation, promote international market access and representation, build human capital, invest in talent development and foster global collaboration.

“We are confident that these measures will accelerate the ICT sector’s growth, create employment opportunities, and establish Nepal as a regional and global tech hub. We stand ready to collaborate with the Government of Nepal (GoN) and other stakeholders to transform these plans into actionable outcomes,” the petition said.

In his response, Prof Dr Koirala, who is also an MP in the Federal Parliament, said that he was aware of the potential of the IT sector in Nepal. “I really appreciate the extraordinary role Nepali professionals are playing. I will convey your concerns and suggestions to the government of Nepal and also follow up on a timely basis.”

Dr Koirala is currently visiting the UK and is scheduled to meet British MPs, Ministers and members of the Nepali diaspora.
