Helicopter flights resumed in Khumbu Region following agreement

KATHMANDU: Helicopter operators have been allowed to resume flights in the Khumbu region, following an agreement with Sagarmatha National Park. The park has granted permission for helicopter operations that do not harm forests, wildlife, or biodiversity, ensuring the continuity of flights in the Everest region.

Previously, both the park authorities and local municipalities had decided to halt commercial helicopter flights starting January 1, allowing only essential flights with prior permission. However, citing safety concerns, helicopter operators had decided to suspend even critical flights in the Solukhumbu district.

This decision by operators to cease essential services compelled Sagarmatha National Park to revoke its earlier restrictions.

Just on Monday, the Solukhumbu District Administration Office had expressed concern over red flags placed at helipads in the Everest region. Local authorities warned that obstructing helicopter flights conducted in accordance with regulations had caused challenges in disaster management, medical evacuations, and tourism promotion. They also cautioned that those creating such disruptions would face strict legal action.

This move ensures a resumption of vital services and supports the region’s tourism and emergency needs.
