KATHMANDU: The Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for the Upper Arun Hydropower Project has been approved by the Ministry of Forests and Environment. The ministry confirmed that the EIA was approved on Poush 19 with priority given to this transformative energy project.
Located in Bhotekhola, Sankhuwasabha, the project has an estimated total cost of NPR 214 billion and a generation capacity of 1,063.36 megawatts, making it the second-largest hydropower project in Nepal to date.
The government has allocated 21.084 hectares of land for the project, a decision already endorsed by the Cabinet. Forest Minister Ain Bahadur Shahi Thakuri has emphasized the need for resolving any legal hurdles promptly to ensure uninterrupted progress on development projects.
The ministry has reiterated its commitment to prioritizing national pride projects and those of significant national importance, advancing their processes with urgency and efficiency. The Upper Arun project is expected to play a pivotal role in Nepal’s energy sector transformation.
