Nepal records trade deficit with 118 countries, surplus with 30 in first five months of FY

KATHMANDU:  In the first five months of the current fiscal year, Nepal engaged in trade with 149 countries. According to the Department of Customs, Nepal recorded a trade surplus with 30 countries and a trade deficit with 118 countries.

During this period, Nepal imported goods worth NPR 661.48 billion while exporting goods worth only NPR 73.66 billion. The data shows that Nepal’s trade is in deficit with 118 countries, including India and China. Countries such as India, China, Argentina, Ukraine, Australia, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Qatar, UAE, France, Vietnam, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Korea, and Canada are among those with which Nepal has a trade deficit.

Nepal imported goods worth NPR 410.56 billion from India and exported only NPR 52.01 billion to the country, resulting in a trade deficit of NPR 358.55 billion with India. Similarly, Nepal has a trade deficit of NPR 129.63 billion with China. Imports from China amounted to NPR 131.38 billion, while exports were just NPR 1.75 billion.

Despite the overall trade deficit, Nepal achieved a trade surplus with 30 countries during the first five months of the current fiscal year. Countries such as Afghanistan, Denmark, Austria, Latvia, Maldives, Croatia, Russia, Iceland, Mauritius, Uganda, Iran, Malta, Serbia, Zambia, Uzbekistan, Georgia, Bosnia, Aruba, Uruguay, Lebanon, Bahamas, Sudan, and Panama showed a trade surplus for Nepal.

For instance, Nepal imported goods worth NPR 12.39 million from Afghanistan while exporting goods worth NPR 408.15 million, resulting in a trade surplus of NPR 395.76 million. Similarly, Nepal recorded a trade surplus of NPR 189.52 million with Denmark, NPR 78.01 million with Austria, NPR 17.44 million with Latvia, and NPR 14.58 million with Maldives.

Additionally, Nepal exclusively exports goods to countries such as Aruba, Uruguay, Cayman Islands, Chad, Mali, Sudan, Panama, Papua New Guinea, and the Central African Republic.
