KATHMANDU: In a tragic aviation disaster on Sunday, a Jeju Air flight crash-landed at Muan International Airport in South Korea, leaving at least 62 people dead. The South Jeolla Fire Service has confirmed that the victims include 25 males and 37 females, with only two survivors currently reported.
Jeju Air promptly replaced its website’s homepage with a statement addressing the accident, offering condolences and assistance. “Jeju Air will make every effort for this accident. We apologize for causing concerns,” the statement read. The airline has also provided emergency contact numbers for families of those on board.
Harrowing Crash Footage Footage of the incident, aired by prominent South Korean news outlets YTN, JTBC, and MBC, captured the aircraft sliding on its belly at high speed. Both the back and front landing gear appeared absent as smoke poured from the rear of the plane.
The video shows the aircraft careening off the runway and colliding with an earthen embankment. Moments later, the plane erupted into a massive fireball. Emergency responders and firefighters rushed to the scene but faced significant challenges due to the intensity of the blaze.
Investigation Underway Authorities are working to determine the cause of the catastrophic landing. Aviation experts have raised questions about potential technical failures or pilot error, though Jeju Air has yet to release additional details.
