KATHMANDU: Basanta Raj Mishra, a pioneering figure in Nepal’s tourism industry and the Executive Chairman of Temple Tiger Group, has passed away at the age of 72. Mishra, who had dedicated over four decades to the tourism sector, succumbed to complications from dengue and a brain hemorrhage, according to family sources. He passed away early Sunday morning.
Born in January 1952, Mishra was a respected name in Nepal’s tourism circles, playing a vital role in the development of wildlife tourism in the country. He held prominent international positions as a former Secretary and Treasurer of the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) International. He also served as the former Chairman of PATA Nepal Chapter and the Association of Tour Operators in Nepal.
Mishra was not only a key figure in promoting Nepal’s tourism industry globally, but also a founding member of the Nepal Tourism Board. His efforts in bringing high-quality and high-spending tourists to Nepal set him apart as a visionary entrepreneur. He also served as the Honorary Consul of Chile in Nepal.
Widely recognized for his contributions to wildlife tourism, Mishra played a pivotal role in shaping Nepal’s tourism policies and marketing strategies, making the country a favored destination for international travelers.
Mishra is survived by his wife and son. His final rites will be performed today, as confirmed by the family.
In addition to his tourism ventures, Mishra was actively involved in social services through various philanthropic initiatives. He established welfare organizations that contributed to social causes, further demonstrating his commitment to community development.
