Traffic redirected through Nagdhunga tunnel amid nationwide road obstructions

KATHMANDU: In response to severe flooding and landslides that have disrupted the Nagdhunga-Muglin road section, cargo and passenger vehicles stranded at the west portal of the Nagdhunga Tunnel are now being redirected toward Kathmandu. The situation escalated due to persistent rainfall since Thursday, resulting in significant obstructions on highways across the nation.

The Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport, in collaboration with local government authorities, has coordinated efforts to facilitate the movement of vehicles to Kathmandu. “Due to the increased traffic congestion caused by landslides in various areas of the Nagdhunga-Muglin road section, we have decided to utilize the tunnel for vehicle transit,” a ministry spokesperson stated.

However, it is important to note that the tunnel construction is still incomplete, raising concerns about safety and capacity. “We are making the best of the current circumstances, but the situation remains precarious as the ongoing rainfall continues to affect road conditions,” the spokesperson added.

Authorities reported that numerous highways nationwide have been obstructed due to the relentless rain. As the situation develops, local officials are closely monitoring the conditions and working to clear the roads as swiftly as possible.

Travelers are urged to exercise caution and stay updated on the weather conditions and road status. With transportation routes compromised, the impact on trade and daily commutes could be substantial, creating additional challenges for residents and businesses alike.

Local authorities and the ministry are committed to restoring normalcy as quickly as possible, prioritizing safety for all travelers. Further updates will be provided as the situation evolves.
