KATHMANDU: In a significant diplomatic meeting held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nepal’s Foreign Minister Dr. Arzu Rana Deuba emphasized the urgent need for additional air routes between Nepal and India to improve connectivity between the two neighboring countries. The discussion took place during a visit by Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, and it covered a broad range of topics, including bilateral relations, economic aid, and ongoing projects.
Dr. Rana Deuba highlighted the operational challenges faced by Bhairahawa and Pokhara airports, which currently rely on the Simara route for their flight operations. She urged India to consider establishing new air routes through Nepalgunj and Mahendranagar, which would significantly enhance the efficiency and reach of air travel between the two countries.
The meeting also touched on India’s plans to establish a quality testing laboratory for fruits and vegetables at the Nepal-India border. This initiative is expected to streamline trade and ensure the quality of agricultural products moving between the two nations.
Progress on the long-delayed Pancheshwar Project was noted during the talks. Most of the outstanding issues have been resolved, and the remaining technical matters are to be addressed by a specialized group. Additionally, discussions included the release of water from the Tanakpur Dam canal, flood control measures for the Badganga and Rapti rivers, and the opening of the Darchula bridge, all of which are critical to cross-border cooperation.
Both parties expressed their commitment to continuing dialogue on trade and transportation, recognizing the importance of these sectors in fostering stronger economic ties. Dr. Rana Deuba also took the opportunity to thank India for its timely support in rescuing victims of the recent Jajarkot earthquake.
This meeting underscores the ongoing collaboration and dialogue between Nepal and India, focusing on enhancing connectivity and addressing mutual challenges to foster stronger bilateral relations.
