KATHMANDU: Nepal exported electricity worth NPR 16.93 billion to India in the fiscal year 2023/24. The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) generated an income of NPR 16.93 billion by exporting 1.94 billion units of electricity to India in the last fiscal year.
NEA has been selling surplus electricity at competitive rates on the Indian Energy Exchange’s day-ahead and real-time markets, as well as to the Indian company NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Limited under a mid-term power agreement.
NVVN has been selling this power to the state of Haryana in India. The average rate of the exported power is NPR 8.72 per unit.
Meanwhile, according to NEA, Nepal imported electricity worth NPR 16.81 billion in the last fiscal year. Due to reduced water flow in rivers across the country during winter, electricity production decreases, leading to high demand for power. As a result, 183 billion units of electricity were imported from India to meet domestic demand.
The average rate of imported power during the winter season is NPR 9.17 per unit. In the last fiscal year, NPR 122.3 million more worth of electricity was exported to India compared to the amount imported.
In the fiscal year 2022/23, Nepal imported electricity worth NPR 19.44 billion, while electricity worth NPR 10.45 billion was exported.
Kulman Ghising, Managing Director of NEA, said, “Although power imports will be necessary to meet domestic demands during the winter months for the next few years, the volume of exports will increase.”
