Nepal Explores Diverse Energy Solutions Beyond Hydroelectricity

KATHMANDU: In a strategic move towards sustainable energy development, stakeholders in Nepal are increasingly focusing on alternative energy sources such as hydrogen, solar, and wind power. This emphasis was underscored during the ‘Himalayan Hydro Expo 2024,’ organized by the Independent Energy Producers Association of Nepal (IPPAN), where experts convened to discuss the pioneering of clean energy synergy.

During the session themed ‘Pioneering the Clean Energy Synergy,’ a series of insightful presentations highlighted the imperative of diversifying Nepal’s energy mix for enhanced energy security and sustainability. Kathmandu University professor and hydrogen expert, Biraj Singh Thapa, projected a significant decline in hydrogen prices by 2030, emphasizing Nepal’s potential to emerge as a key player in hydrogen production. Thapa’s working paper revealed Nepal’s competitive advantage in producing low-cost hydrogen through a combination of solar, wind, and hydro power.

Thapa’s presentation also showcased Kathmandu University’s groundbreaking demonstration of hydrogen-powered vehicles and appliances, signaling the feasibility and viability of hydrogen as a clean energy solution. He called upon the government and private sectors to capitalize on this potential and invest in hydrogen technology, citing ongoing collaborations with Buddhabhumi Hydropower for hydrogen production.

Furthermore, Thapa advocated for streamlined regulations and procedures to facilitate Nepal’s entry into the global hydrogen market by 2030-2040.

In a parallel discussion on solar energy, IPPAN member Kubermani Nepal emphasized the untapped potential of solar energy production in Nepal. Despite favorable conditions for solar energy generation, Nepal has only achieved a fraction of its solar energy targets. Nepal urged the government to prioritize solar energy initiatives and establish dedicated policies and ministries to accelerate solar project development.

Additionally, alternative energy promoter Kushal Gurung highlighted the potential of organic waste conversion for energy production, underscoring the need for innovative solutions to address Nepal’s energy challenges sustainably.

Addressing the session, representatives from  Alternative Energy Promotion Center reiterated the importance of leveraging renewable energy sources to meet Nepal’s growing energy demand while minimizing environmental impact.

Overall, the session underscored the urgent need for coordinated efforts between government agencies, private enterprises, and civil society to harness Nepal’s vast renewable energy potential and accelerate the transition towards a cleaner, more sustainable energy future.
