KATHMANDU: Thamel, Kathmandu’s bustling tourist hub, is set to undergo a significant transformation as it gears up to operate round the clock, starting April 13, coinciding with the Nepali New Year.
The Thamel Tourism Development Council has announced that Thamel and Durbamarga areas will be open 24 hours a day, offering tourists and locals alike the opportunity to explore the vibrant neighborhood at any time of the day or night.
Council Chairperson Bhabiswor Sharma expressed readiness for the full-time operation, highlighting that all necessary preparations have been completed to ensure smooth functioning. The District Administration Office, Kathmandu, will play a crucial role in maintaining security and managing other essential services in the area.
Assistant Chief District Officer of Kathmandu, Hari Prasad Sharma, assured that security measures have been put in place to enforce the decision effectively. He emphasized that safety protocols for 24-hour operations have been established based on input from various stakeholders.
The initiative will see all tourism-related businesses, including clubs, dance bars, folk music venues, and discos, remain open throughout the night. Chairperson Sharma confirmed that night-time activities will be extended to all parts of Thamel except Bhagawanbahal, following consultations with stakeholders.
However, strict adherence to a code of conduct is essential for businesses to continue operating beyond the designated hours. Any establishments failing to meet the criteria outlined in the code will face closure from April 14 onwards.
The move to operate Thamel round the clock is expected to boost tourism and enhance the overall experience for visitors. With its vibrant streets, diverse culinary scene, and lively nightlife, Thamel is a central attraction for both domestic and international tourists visiting Kathmandu.
Local businesses are optimistic about the extended operating hours, anticipating increased footfall and revenue. The initiative is also poised to create new employment opportunities and stimulate economic growth in the area.
As Nepal embraces a new era of tourism development, the 24-hour operation of Thamel marks a significant milestone in enhancing the city’s appeal as a vibrant and welcoming destination for travelers from around the world.
