24-Hour business operation guidelines implemented in Thamel and Durbarmarg

KATHMANDU: In a bid to boost tourism and enhance the vibrancy of Kathmandu’s nightlife, the government has taken a bold step by enforcing guidelines to allow businesses in Thamel and Durbar Marg areas to operate round the clock.

The decision comes after a meeting between stakeholders and the Ministry of Home Affairs, where measures were discussed to cater to the increasing influx of tourists and to revitalize these key tourism hubs.

The District Administration Office (DAO) Kathmandu, in collaboration with the Ministry of Home Affairs, has laid out comprehensive guidelines for businesses, particularly those in the entertainment sector, wishing to extend their operating hours beyond the previous 10 pm curfew.

Among these regulations, entertainment-related establishments must install soundproof systems to mitigate noise disturbances for surrounding areas and maintain detailed records of their employees.

Furthermore, strict measures have been put in place to regulate entry, particularly targeting individuals under the age of 18 in venues such as dance bars, live music venues, pubs, and clubs. These measures aim to ensure the safety and well-being of all patrons, aligning with broader societal values.

For businesses operating until the early hours of the morning, additional regulations come into effect. These include provisions for managing transportation services for intoxicated customers, curbing activities of a sexual nature, and upholding cultural values in the performances offered to patrons.

The decision to implement these guidelines underscores the government’s commitment to fostering a safe and vibrant nightlife scene while balancing cultural sensitivities and tourist demands.

With tourism being a significant contributor to Nepal’s economy, attracting a record high of 128,167 foreign visitors in March alone according to Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) data, the move aims to capitalize on this momentum and further elevate Kathmandu’s appeal as a tourist destination.

The DAO Kathmandu has been entrusted with the responsibility of overseeing security and overall management for the uninterrupted operation of businesses in these areas.

It is anticipated that these bustling hubs will transition to the new operating modality by April 13, coinciding with the Nepali New Year, marking a significant milestone in Kathmandu’s efforts to revitalize its tourism sector and enhance the overall experience for both locals and visitors alike.

As the implementation of these guidelines progresses, stakeholders are optimistic about the positive impact it will have on the local economy, employment opportunities, and the overall cultural landscape of Thamel and Durbar Marg.

With proper enforcement and cooperation from businesses and the community, Kathmandu’s nightlife is poised to thrive, offering a diverse range of experiences for all to enjoy, day or night.
