KATHMANDU: In a groundbreaking development for Nepal’s energy sector, Kathmandu University has achieved a historic milestone by successfully completing the test of hydrogen production. This significant accomplishment marks the first-ever test of its kind in the country, propelling Nepal into the forefront of hydrogen technology innovation.
The test, conducted on Sunday under the Nepal Hydrogen Initiatives project at Kathmandu University, involved the successful operation of a hydrogen refilling station. Led by Project Head and Associate Professor Dr. Biraj Singh Thapa, the project team accomplished the task with meticulous planning and execution.
Following rigorous testing procedures, the produced hydrogen was successfully stored and transferred to a vehicle for further evaluation. Dr. Thapa, expressing his elation at the achievement, likened it to scaling Mount Everest, highlighting the immense effort and dedication invested in realizing this breakthrough.
“This success signifies a monumental leap for Nepal, marking our official entry into the hydrogen era,” remarked Dr. Thapa. “The university’s capacity to produce, store, and refill hydrogen demonstrates our commitment to advancing sustainable energy solutions.”
Hydrogen, derived from Nepal’s abundant hydropower resources and water, holds immense promise as a clean and renewable energy source. Dr. Thapa emphasized the significance of this achievement, stressing its potential to revolutionize the country’s energy landscape and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
The successful operation of the hydrogen refilling station paves the way for its formal inauguration through a dedicated program. Dr. Thapa underscored the importance of this milestone, signaling a shift towards commercial utilization of hydrogen in Nepal.
“In the coming days, we will focus on promoting the commercial application of hydrogen and collaborate with the government to formulate policies conducive to its widespread adoption,” stated Dr. Thapa. “This marks the beginning of a new chapter in Nepal’s energy journey, one driven by innovation, sustainability, and environmental stewardship.”
The development of hydrogen technology aligns with Nepal’s broader objectives of achieving energy security, reducing carbon emissions, and fostering economic growth through renewable energy investments. As the nation embraces this pioneering technology, it positions itself as a trailblazer in the global transition towards clean and sustainable energy solutions.
Moving forward, stakeholders anticipate further advancements in hydrogen infrastructure and adoption, with the potential to revolutionize transportation, industry, and power generation sectors. With concerted efforts and strategic partnerships, Nepal is poised to harness the full potential of hydrogen as a key pillar of its future energy strategy.
