KATHMANDU: The government of Nepal is gearing up to implement a groundbreaking decision to open the iconic Thamel and Durbarmarg areas of Kathmandu for 24-hour business operations. This move comes as a result of extensive discussions and meetings involving Chief District Officer Jitendra Basnet, various stakeholders, and entrepreneurs.
During a recent meeting held at the District Administration Office in Kathmandu, Chief District Officer Basnet addressed the issue of allowing businesses to operate round the clock.
The initiative was propelled forward after Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Rabi Lamichhane instructed concerned authorities to facilitate 24-hour operations in these bustling commercial hubs.
To ensure the safety and security of residents and visitors alike, the District Security Committee has devised a comprehensive security plan for the extended operating hours of Thamel and Durbarmarg.
Chief District Officer Basnet emphasized that both areas are prepared for continuous operation, with an integrated plan in place to address any challenges that may arise.
One of the key aspects discussed during the meeting was the need for consistency in pricing and service quality throughout the day and night. Chief District Officer Basnet emphasized that entrepreneurs must maintain uniformity in their offerings and refrain from altering prices between daytime and nighttime.
While acknowledging the potential increase in customer footfall during extended hours, Chief District Officer Basnet also highlighted the importance of implementing effective security measures to prevent any rise in criminal activities. Additionally, he urged entrepreneurs to uphold ethical business practices and avoid contributing to noise pollution or infringing upon the rights of others.
The decision to implement 24-hour business operations has been met with enthusiasm from stakeholders, including Bhabishwor Sharma, Chairman of the Thamel Tourism Development Council, and Sanjay Adhikari, Treasurer of the Durbarmarg Development Board. Both expressed support for the government’s decision, emphasizing the need for safe and orderly business operations in these vibrant commercial districts.
According to officials, the new regulations are expected to be enforced within a week, marking a significant step towards revitalizing Kathmandu’s nightlife and promoting economic activity in Thamel and Durbarmarg.
With proper planning and coordination, this initiative has the potential to enhance the overall experience for residents and tourists while maintaining the cultural integrity of these historic areas.
