KATHMANDU: Recently, the government has extended the management rights of the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA), entrusting it with the oversight of 27 mountains. In a Cabinet meeting held last month, the NMA’s rights to manage these mountains were renewed for an additional five years, following a similar grant in 2018.
The NMA actively engages in the promotion and management of various peaks, including Chulu East (6,584 m), Hiunchuli (6,434 m), Mera Peak (6,470 m), and Lobuche (6,090 m). Apart from promoting these peaks, the association is also responsible for royalty collection.
Noteworthy is the association’s crucial role in managing smaller mountains, serving as valuable training grounds for climbers before attempting higher peaks. As part of its ongoing initiatives, the NMA has expressed a desire for the government to further expand the number of mountains under its management.
