KATHMANDU: China Eastern Airlines is gearing up to restore regular passenger flights on the Kunming-Kathmandu route, marking a significant milestone in reestablishing air connectivity between China and Nepal.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) has granted the airline permission to operate the flights, bringing hope for increased travel and trade opportunities.
Initially, China Eastern will operate one flight per week, utilizing the Boeing 737-700 aircraft for this route. Gyanendra Bhul, the information officer of CAAN, confirmed the approval and revealed that the airline has expressed its willingness to increase flight frequency based on demand.
Before the COVID-19 pandemic, China Eastern used to run seven flights per week on this route, but the pandemic led to the suspension of passenger flights, with the airline operating only cargo services.
However, as the situation has improved and the pandemic is under better control, China Eastern is now resuming passenger services to Kathmandu.
Currently, six airlines are facilitating flights between China and Nepal, strengthening bilateral ties and fostering opportunities for tourism and trade.
The resumption of regular passenger flights is expected to further boost these engagements and enhance connectivity between the two countries.
