Three Sherpa guides feared dead after being caught in the Khumbu icefall on Mount Everest

KATHMANDU: After being buried on Wednesday due to significant ice mass movement in the Khumbu Icefall of Mount Everest, three climbers are believed to be dead.

Among those hurt in the accident were Da Tsheri Sherpa (45), Lakpa Rita Sherpa (22), and Temba Tenzi Sherpa (32). These climbers, who are long-term residents of Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality 5, have been employed as mountaineering guides by Imagine Trek Pvt Ltd.

According to Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee chair Lamakaji Sherpa, these climbers are buried beneath the mass of ice. In the Khumbu Icefall of Camp-1 area, which is situated at an elevation of 5,700 meters above sea level, the climbers encountered the incident after they fell due to the movement of ice masses. He says it’s extremely unlikely that the missing climbers will be discovered alive.

The Department of Tourism reports that since 9:30 on Wednesday morning, they have been missing somewhere between the base camp and Camp One. After the incident, the department dispatched a rescue crew in a Simrik Air helicopter to look for the missing climbers.

A helicopter is being sent to retrieve the mountaineers’ dead bodies, according to the District Police Office of Solukhumbu. However, the narrow rift in the area where these unfortunate climbers have been trapped is making it difficult for the rescue team to work. .

These Imagine Trek employees were tasked with fixing the routes and overseeing the logistics up to Camp-2 for the mountaineers who have been given permission to summit Mount Everest this spring. This season’s first mountaineering mishap has occurred.

For this year’s spring climbing season, the government has given permission to more than 240 mountaineers. These mountaineers have been granted permission to ascend the highest peak in the world on behalf of 24 mountaineering expedition teams. 41 women are on these teams.
