KATHMANDU: Three young people who had earlier been detained for demonstrating against Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, a former Maoist rebel, have been imprisoned. The young men are protesting against higher bank and government interest rates.
On March 26, the Chief District Officer of Kathmandu, Ghanshyam Upadhyay, set a bail of Rs 5,000 for each of them in the case involving indecent behavior.
They were all taken to the Central Jail after failing to post bail: Uddhav Basnet, 23, of Solukhumbu; Som Sharma, 30, of Baglung; and Biplav Khadka, 18, of Bajhang. They were imprisoned because they failed to post bail, according to DSP Niranjan Dutt Bhatt of the District Police Complex in Kathmandu.
At an event in Baneshwar, Kathmandu, on March 7, they yelled anti-Prime Minister Dahal chants.
They were immediately taken into custody by the police. It was widely criticized after a video of the police attempting to gag them as they were being arrested and loaded into a car was made public.
