NEA to build transmission line network that consumes 4,000MW of electricity in Madhesh

KATHMANDU: The Nepal Electricity Authority is going to set up a transmission operation in the districts of the Madhesh province that may use roughly 4,000 megawatts of electricity in order to increase the internal consumption of electricity produced in the nation.

A high-capacity transmission line corridor will be built by the authority in the southern portion of the districts of Bara, Parsa, Rautahat, Mahottari, Dhanusha, etc, by 2050.

On the southern border with India, 400 KV double-circuit transmission lines and substations will be built next to the Hulaki Expressway. The transmission line corridor will be built out of the four circuits in the first phase by running the upper two at 400 KV and the lower two at 132 KV.

Substations will be established locally in key locations for the supply of power. The proposed transmission line’s path and the substations’ locations are still being determined.

The transmission network infrastructure for the Bara-Parsa Industrial Corridor will be constructed to use roughly 3,200 megawatts of power in the Birganj area and 800 megawatts in the Janakpur area. With this, the districts of the Madhesh province, which have significant potential for urban and industrial growth, will have access to an adequate, dependable, and high-quality energy supply.

The cost of building transmission lines and substations will exceed 50 billion rupees. According to Kulman Ghising, managing director of the NEA, this sum will be obtained through contributions from the Nepal Government and Electricity Authority, as well as subsidized loans from the Asian Development Bank and Exim Bank of India.

On Saturday and Sunday, a high-level team, including the authority’s executive director Ghising and consultants, visited the proposed line construction site and collected data regarding potential locations for the construction of 400 and 132 kV transmission lines and substations, as well as conditions surrounding electricity demand and consumption.

According to Managing Director Ghising, the South Corridor transmission line will be built in stages to boost domestic consumption and export any extra electricity used in the nation to India. According to Ghising, “the first phase will see the construction of the transmission lines and substations that are urgently required due to the increase in consumption, the second phase.

According to him, “some transmission lines and substations are being built, some are starting immediately, while others are being developed in the long run, taking land for substations, figuring out the route of transmission lines, starting the procedure for environmental studies, etc. Electricity may be exported to Bindu, he claimed.

Targeting the enterprises that are active in the Bara-Parsa industrial corridor and will be opened in the future, the procedure for building a 400 KV substation in Pokhria of Parsa and Nijgarh of Bara has advanced. Parallel to the Hulaki Highway, the same 400 KV line will be extended in the direction of Janakpur. In Baraka Prasauni, land has been purchased for the construction of a 132 KV substation.

A 132 KV substation is being built from Dhalkebar in Dhanusha to Loharpatti in Mahottari to improve the reliability and quality of the power supply in the Janakpur region. At Loharpatti, a 132 KV substation is being built. Likewise, the Dhalkebar-Balganga 132 KV transmission line is also under construction.
