Lockdown in Kathmandu extended until June 3; groceries to remain shut

KATHMANDU: The ongoing lockdown, officially the prohibitory order, imposed in the Kathmandu valley has been extended by one week–up to June 3.

In addition to the previous orders, the chief district officers have ordered the closure of groceries including grocery sections of department stores, but the shops of vegetables and fruits, dairy products, and meat would open until 9 am every day, informs Kathmandu Assistant CDO Uma Kanta Adhikari.

Initially imposed for one week since April 29, it was extended until May 12 and then until May 27 earlier. However, a meeting of the three chief district officers of the Kathmandu valley on Tuesday decided to extend it by seven days, arguing the spread of the coronavirus infection has not been contained yet.

Likewise, government vehicles will be barred from plying in the daytime. The vehicles of government offices, public utilities, and internet service providers will be allowed to operate between 9:30 and 10:30 in the morning, and between 5 and 6 in the evening.

The new restrictions will come into effect from Friday morning as the previous extension would be in effect until Thursday (May 27).
