Bank lending ticks up by 25.63% to Rs 3,573 billion

Credit crunch looms as commercial banks grapple with liquidity mismatch

KATHMANDU: Loan disbursement from commercial banks have increased by 25.63 percent in the last eight months of 2020-21 compared to the same period of the previous fiscal year.

As per statistics of Nepal Bankers Association (NBA), 27 commercial banks have disbursed Rs 3,573 billion loans until April against Rs 2,844 billion that commercial banks had issued till April last year.

Though the COVID-19 pandemic has affected various sectors since more than one year due to lockdown and other restrictions imposed by the government, banking sector is doing good business, it looks.

Commercial banks were operating partially for three months since the lockdown was imposed on March 24 last year. Yet, the business of commercial banks has been satisfactory.

Though banking business have not been affected extremely so far, bankers are worried that the second wave of COVID-19, which is spreading rapidly, might impact the banking business.
