House panel wants govt’s insurance schemes brought under Insurance Board

KATHMANDU: The Finance Committee of the Parliament has proposed to bring the government’s health insurance scheme under the Insurance Board Nepal (IBN).

The new Insurance Bill, which is yet to be passed from the Parliament, proposes transforming the current Insurance Board into Insurance Authority.

As of now, the government is operating different health insurance scheme through a separate Health Insurance Board.

At a meeting organized to discuss on the new Insurance Bill presented in the parliament, lawmakers opined that all other insurance schemes of the government should be brought under the IBN.

“We have suggested the government to include the health insurance scheme under the IBN,” informed Krishna Prasad Dahal, chairman of the committee.

The new Insurance Bill, which is yet to be passed from the Parliament, proposes transforming the current Insurance Board into Insurance Authority.

The Bill also has a provision to establish a special fund targeting the marginalized people and insurance companies will be required to allocate one percent of their annual income to the fund.
