Nepal-India energy talk begins, Energy Banking among key agendas

KATHMANDU: The Nepal-India energy secretary level meeting has begun virtually from today.

The key agenda issues to be taken up include grids Interconnectedness, market access for Nepali surplus power and Indian investment in Nepali hydro and solar sectors.

Among others, the long-planned energy banking between the two nations and its implementation is the major agenda to be discussed in the meeting.

Nepal and India in January last year had agreed on energy banking, paving the way for selling surplus electricity and purchasing the same volume of energy when necessary.

Nepal had long been demanding the energy banking agreement with India to to ensure that the country is able to export its surplus electricity to India, especially during monsoon and import power from the southern neighbour when necessary.

The energy banking mechanism allows Nepal to export power to India amid surplus generation and import the same amount of power when necessary.
