Govt seeks clarification with 35 local bodies on failure to present budget on time

KATHMANDU: The Ministry of Federal Affairs and General Administration (MoFAGA) have sought clarification with 35 local bodies that have failed to bring budget on time.

Though local governments are mandated to bring the budget by June 24, 35 out of 753 local governments are yet to endorse their budget.

“We have asked them reasons behind their failure to bring budget on time and have also notified them that the federal government might punish them by stopping different grants being provided,” informed Basanta Adhikari, joint secretary at MoFAGA.

Especially, different local bodies accross Province 2, Province 1, Bagmati Province and Sudurpaschim Province are yet to present the budget for the current fiscal year.

Officials at the MoFAGA said that these local bodies were repeatedly directed to present the budget on time. “As they failed to comply with the direction and constitutional mandate, we have asked Ministry of Finance to take necessary action against local bodies not bringing the budget yet,” said an official at MoFAGA.
