Govt issues protocols for mountaineering and trekking

KATHMANDU: The Department of Tourism (DoT) has issued the protocols that foreigners who want to visit Nepal for mountaineering and trekking activities will need to follow during their stay here.

After the government allowed resumption of mountaineering and trekking activities, both the DoT and Nepal Mountaineering Association have started issuing expedition permits.

With an aim to make expeditions and trekking safe and secure the DoT has issued health safety protocols today.
As per the protocols, foreigners who want to visit Nepal for mountaineering or expedition have to obtain a visa from the respective Nepali embassy or consulate prior to travelling to Nepal as the government has not yet opened the on-arrival visa facility.

According to DoT, foreigners travelling from countries that do not have visa services for Nepal can contact their trekking agencies to arrange for the visa.

Similarly, foreigners have to submit a negative PCR report that certifies that they had conducted the test within 72 hours of their flight time and also their visa and permission letter for visa on their arrival at the Immigration Office of the Tribhuvan International Airport.

They also have to submit documents of hotel bookings which state that arrangements have been made for at least seven days quarantine facility. The documents of COVID-19 insurance worth $5,000 per person also have to be submitted at the TIA Immigration Office.

The seven-day quarantine is mandatory for foreigners and they have to stay in the hotel quarantine until they get a negative PCR test result.

Meanwhile, trekking or expedition companies have to buy COVID-19 insurance policies worth Rs 100,000 per person for their clients. The DoT has requested all the travel and trekking agencies to forward this notice to their respective clients.
