KATHMANDU: World famous mountaineer Ang Rita Sherpa, also renowned as ‘The Snow Leopard’,breathed his last today.
The legendary mountaineer passed away at his daughter’s house in Jorpati this morning, informed Ang Chhiring Sherpa, former president of Nepal Mountaineering Association.
Ang Rita was suffering from different ailments related to the liver and brain. He holds the world record for climbing Mt Everest 10 times without oxygen. His funeral will be held according to religious tradition, said Ang Chhiring Sherpa.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli also expressed his condolences on Sherpa’s demise today on Twitter. He tweeted, “The death of Ang Rita Sherpa, who set a world record by climbing Mt Everest 10 times without oxygen, is deeply saddening. In this sad hour, I pay my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and well-wishers. His record will always be remembered.”
Deepak Raj Joshi, former chief executive officer of Nepal Tourism Board mentioned, “So sad that we have lost a great mountaineer whose contribution in conservation and promotion of mountain tourism is really praiseworthy.”
