Import of food items starts rising

KATHMANDU: Import of food items surged by three times between mid-August and mid-September compared to the import in between mid-March and mid-April.

According to the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies, a total of 218,378 metric tons of food items were imported during the period between mid-August and mid-September. As per the ministry, 7,044 metric tons of food items were imported every day during this period.

Meanwhile a total of 46,831 metric tons of food items were imported during the period between mid-March and mid-April. During this period, a total of 2,032 tons of food items were imported on a daily basis. As per the government, import of food items is gradually increasing after the government lifted the lockdown and eased border controls for import and export of goods.

However, the ministry has stated that the import of pulses has been declining for the last two months. As per the ministry, a total of 35,580 metric tons of pulses were imported in the last two months.The country generally imports pulses from India.
