One held in Bara for black marketing of onions

KATHMANDU: A vegetable trader in Bara has been arrested for black marketing of onions.

Police in Bara said that Chandan Shah was detained for doubling the price of onions and creating an artificial shortage since the last few days. According to Spokesperson of Bara Police Office, Gautam Mishra, Shah was arrested based on information received from the public.

As per Mishra, the police team found that Shah was selling onions at Rs 80 per kg kg whereas he paid purchased them at Rs 43 per kg. The police have sealed his store located in Ward No 1 of Kalaiya Sub-metropolitan City.

The police informed that necessary investigation has started against Shah as per the Black-Marketing and some other Social and Punishment Act, 2032 (1975).

As neighboring India has banned the export of all types of onions, Nepal has been witnessing a massive hike in the price of onions.

Since onions cannot be imported legally from India at present, some traders and shopkeepers living in the Tarai have started smuggling onions from the southern neighbor and selling them at an exorbitant rate.
